The Dutch fabric is a postcolonial reference with the taxidermy head of a fox to express the anonymousness, and even the timelessness of revolutions. The two items in the mannequin’s hand are tools of revolution and emancipation for two continents (Africa and Europe) and highlights the conflation and the dichotomy between not only revolutions in two continents, but also of their histories.
For me, it’s just bizarre to see Shonibare’s mannequin-works with actual heads…
